Getting Your Fireplace Ready for Fall (Yes, Even in Florida)

We get the joke every year: “A fireplace? In Florida?” Then October arrives, the humidity finally breaks, the first cool evening rolls in off the Atlantic — and suddenly a fire sounds like the best idea anyone’s ever had.

Florida fireplaces don’t work as hard as the ones up north, but they still need attention before the season turns. Whether you have a gas fireplace inside, a wood-burner, or an outdoor fire pit on the patio, a little fall prep now means your first cool evening is spent relaxing in front of the flames — not scrambling for a service call.

Here’s what to do before the season starts.

Gas Fireplace: The Annual Once-Over

Gas fireplaces are the workhorses of Florida homes — clean, convenient, and low-maintenance. But “low-maintenance” isn’t “no-maintenance.” Once a year, give yours a real look:

Clean the glass and check the burners. Dust and debris settle on burners during the months your fireplace sits idle. A dirty burner can cause uneven flames or sooting on the glass. Clear the area around the firebox and wipe the glass with a cleaner made for fireplace glass — not household glass cleaner, which can damage the finish.

Test the remote and the pilot. If you haven’t run the fireplace since spring, light it and let it run for a few minutes. Test the remote, the wall switch, and any thermostatic controls. If the pilot won’t stay lit or the flames look weak and yellow instead of strong and blue, that’s a service call — don’t try to fix gas controls yourself.

Check your carbon monoxide detectors. This is the most important item on the list. Every gas fireplace should have a working CO detector nearby. Press the test button, replace batteries, and swap out any detector that’s past its expiration date.

Wood-Burning Fireplace: Chimney First

If you burn wood, the chimney is the whole game. A chimney that’s gone a season or more without a sweep can harbor creosote buildup — and creosote is the fuel behind most chimney fires. Have the chimney swept and inspected before your first fall fire, and check the cap for damage from summer storms.

While you’re at it: make sure the damper opens and closes freely, keep seasoned (not green) firewood stored off the ground under cover, and confirm the smoke detectors in the house are working.

Outdoor Fire Pits: Florida’s Real Fireplace

Here’s the truth about our market: more of our customers use their fireplaces outdoors than in. An outdoor fire pit or fire table is the centerpiece of a Florida patio — and October is when it earns its keep.

Before the season: clear leaves and debris from the burner area, check gas connections and the ignition system on gas fire features, and inspect any hardscape or stonework for cracks that summer’s heat and rain may have opened up. If your fire pit has a cover, use it between uses — salt air and afternoon storms are harder on fire features than most people realize.

And think about placement: a fire pit should sit on a level, non-combustible surface with plenty of clearance on all sides. If you’re rearranging the patio for the cooler months, make sure the fire feature has room to breathe.

When to Call the Pros

Some things are fine as DIY — cleaning glass, testing remotes, clearing debris. But anything involving gas lines, gas valves, or chimney masonry should go to a professional. A licensed service tech can spot the issues you can’t: worn gaskets, cracked firebox liners, failing igniters, or gas connections that need reseating.

That’s also the best argument for buying your fireplace from a full-service company. When something needs attention mid-season, you want the same people who sold and installed it showing up to fix it — not a stranger from an internet search.

Make This the Year You Do It Right

October is the calm before the holiday season — the perfect time to get your fireplace or fire pit ready for the months ahead. A quick inspection now beats a cold-weather service call later.

And if your fireplace days are behind you — the old unit is inefficient, the chimney needs more work than it’s worth, or you just want the convenience of gas instead of wood — stop by and see what’s out there now. Fireplaces have come a long way, and the modern ones are built for exactly how Florida actually lives.
