What 15 Minutes a Month of Hot Tub Maintenance Actually Looks Like

If you’ve ever owned a hot tub — or known someone who has — you’ve heard the complaint: “I spend more time maintaining it than using it.” Test strips, pH up, pH down, shock, alkalinity increaser, clarifier… For a lot of spa owners, water care feels like a part-time job with a chemistry degree requirement.

It doesn’t have to be. If your spa runs Jacuzzi True Water — the nanobubble system we wrote about last time — Jacuzzi says the whole monthly routine fits into about 15 minutes. (That’s their figure, not ours — but having watched the system run, we believe it.) Here’s exactly what those 15 minutes look like.

Minute 0–5: Rinse the filter

Pull the filter out, hose it down with a strong spray nozzle, and put it back. That’s the monthly job — washing out the lotions, oils, and debris the filter caught over the last month. Your owner’s manual will still call for a periodic deep-clean of the filters, but month to month, a rinse is the routine. If you want to be thorough, keep a spare filter on hand and rotate them.

Minute 5–10: Test and treat

Run one test strip. With nanobubbles and UV doing the heavy lifting on contaminants, you’re mostly confirming what you expect: everything’s in range. If the strip shows sanitizer running low, add what your owner’s manual calls for — a small, measured dose, not a chemistry project. Nothing like the weekly balancing act a traditional chlorine spa demands.

Minute 10–15: Wipe the waterline

Grab a soft cloth and wipe around the waterline while you’re standing there. Jacuzzi says the nanobubbles clean not just the water but the spa’s surfaces, plumbing lines, and waterline — so there’s rarely buildup. This is more habit than necessity. Done. Go soak.

What you’re NOT doing anymore

This is the part people don’t believe until they live it:

– No testing the water every couple of days
– No measuring chlorine or bromine after every soak
– No shocking the spa weekly
– No chemical smell on your skin, your suit, or drifting across the patio
– No red eyes, no dried-out skin, no bleached swimsuits

The honest fine print

Fifteen minutes a month is the routine, not the whole story. You’ll still drain and refill the spa occasionally — just less often than a traditional spa, because the water stays fresher longer. Filters eventually wear out and need replacing. And if a monsoon dumps half the neighborhood’s oak pollen into your spa, you’ll spend a few extra minutes skimming. Nobody’s selling you a maintenance-free hot tub. Just one where maintenance stops being the reason you don’t use it.
